A Proxy Server – What is it?

Tuesday, October 12th, 2010

A proxy is a server is a server where you connect to, passing data forward. A client will connect to the proxy server requesting a file, connection or resource from another server.

Data is loaded onto the proxy server rather than the clients computer helping mask the users indentity allowing there source to be allocated as the proxy server. A proxy server can provide a form of anonymous connection to a source as the connection is seen as the proxy server. This can help provide better speed, lower bandwidths and anonymity.

By using a web proxy it allows clients to connect to a web resource using the web proxy’s IP thus allowing data to be seen and transported as anonymous information. You can also browse websites, download / upload files whilst staying protected.

Some proxy servers will store your connection IP as general security measure however most won’t, allowing great anonymity on your web browsing needs.
