Audio Recording

So you want to rip your old tapes and put them onto CD but you don’t know how. Well here is my guide to helping you do it.

Firstly you will need good audio recording software such as Audacity. Audacity is free software available for Windows, Mac and Linux users. It is very simple to use, doesn’t take up much space and once set right records crystal clear audio you can listen too time and time again.

Once you have the program, you need to hook up your hi-fi/tape deck via a phono lead. I use a jack plug to 2 phono lead, which plugs into the back of my tape deck and the line-in socked on the back of my pc. You can either use that type of lead or use a jack plug to plug lead which fits into the headphone socket on your hi-fi and the line in on your computer.
With that all set up double click your volume control next to the clock on the bottom right hand side of your screen. Make sure the Line In volume is not muted and then click options and properties. Then click on Recording and tick the box next to Line In if it’s unticked.

Load up Audacity and make sure the drop down menue is displaying Line In. Set the recording sound to around 5 or 6. Press play on your hi-fi and then the red circle button on Audacity to record your track. Once the track has finished playing press the yellow square to stop recording and then click file and Export as Mp3 to save your mp3. If the sound is too loud or quiet adjust the sound on next recording until you are happy with the quality.
